It turns out that making art is not so much self-expression as a dialog between what we think we want to express and the materials that seem to have their own demands.     1. It’s interesting to think of it in terms of working with historical or archival materials. There’s a point where working with literature or historical and archival materials intersects with the actual community, and that’s where you really begin to know what is the stuff that you are working with, what are its demands, limitations, and its potential.
